The Hei Matau/ Fish hook symbol originates from Maori legend in which the demigod, Maui, pulls the north island of New Zealand from the ocean using a woven line and fish hook.
Traditionally the Hei Matau was used as a tool to catch kaimoana (seafood), to feed and nourish Maori. It also signifies the importance of their relationship to Tangaroa (God of the Sea).
Because of it's significance throughout Maori legend and history, the Hei Matau has become an adornment that is typically worn by people who have a deep respect and connection with the ocean. Such as the frequent traveler or someone/group heading abroad, as it is believed to provide good fortune, safety and strength when travelling over water.
